Four months after the devastating earthquake, the situation in southern Türkiye is still very difficult for many people. According to numbers by UNICEF, a total of 9.1 million people were affected by the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, and 3 million people were displaced. Of that, 1.6 million people are living in informal settlements. Access to education has been hampered for nearly 4 million children, including 350,000 refugee and migrant children.
Ensuring safe learning spaces is one of the main priorities as numerous schools were badly damaged or fully destroyed. The provision of prefabricated schools or containers for both learning and teacher accommodation, along with repairing slightly damaged schools, are now critical steps towards resuming education. However, access to formal schooling isn’t enough to support children and young people. According to the needs assessments implemented by different international organizations, there is also a crucial need to support children with psychosocial support activities.
That’s the reason why Mikado Consulting and StreetSmart are currently finishing the final preparations to set up a first ever mobile school in Türkiye. The school will be operational as from the beginning of August and will start from the youth centers operated by Mikado in the cities of Adiyaman and Kahramanmaras. From there, the local team of educators will reach out to children affected by the earthquake multiple times per week.
